Indulge in the sweet, spiced delight of Basler Läckerli, a traditional Swiss gingerbread treat infused with honey, candied orange peel, and a hint of Kirsch. Perfect for holiday gatherings or a cozy afternoon snack with tea.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 250 g honey
- 200 g sugar
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 100 g candied orange peel
- 100 g mixed nuts (chopped)
- 1 tbsp Kirsch (cherry brandy)
- 1 tsp cinnamon
Method
- 1
Preheat the oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- 2
In a saucepan, combine honey and sugar over low heat. Stir until sugar dissolves and mixture is warm.
- 3
In a large bowl, mix flour, baking powder, cinnamon, candied orange peel, and chopped nuts.
- 4
Add the warm honey mixture and Kirsch (or water) to the dry ingredients. Mix until a dough forms.
- 5
Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1 cm thick. Cut into small squares or rectangles.
- 6
Place the pieces on the prepared baking tray, ensuring they are spaced apart. Bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.
- 7
Remove from the oven, let cool slightly, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- 8
Once cool, store in an airtight container. Enjoy your homemade Basler Läckerli!
