Indulge in the sweet layers of flaky phyllo dough, rich walnuts, and fragrant spices of baklava. This Mediterranean delight is perfect for special occasions or as a luxurious treat to share with loved ones.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 pack phyllo dough
- 3 cups finely chopped walnuts
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- 2
In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts (or pistachios), ground cinnamon, and half of the sugar. Set aside.
- 3
Unroll the phyllo dough and keep it covered with a damp towel to prevent it from drying out.
- 4
Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 8 sheets of phyllo, brushing each sheet with butter before adding the next.
- 5
Sprinkle a thin layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Add 4 layers of phyllo, brushing each with butter, then another layer of nuts. Repeat until all the nuts are used, finishing with 8 layers of phyllo on top.
- 6
Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes with a sharp knife. Bake for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
- 7
While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining water, sugar, lemon juice, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
- 8
After baking, immediately pour the hot syrup over the baklava. Let it sit for at least 4 hours before serving to absorb the syrup.
