Indulge in the sweet, flaky layers of baklava, a classic Mediterranean dessert bursting with the rich flavors of walnuts, cinnamon, and a hint of lemon. Perfect for special occasions or a delightful end to a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

Method

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts and ground cinnamon (if using).

  3. 3

Melt the butter in a saucepan. Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in a buttered 9x13 inch baking dish. Brush the top with melted butter. Repeat this process for 8 layers.

  4. 4

Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo dough. Add 4 more layers of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Repeat the nut layer and phyllo layering until all ingredients are used, ending with 8 layers of phyllo on top.

  5. 5

Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

  6. 6

While the baklava is baking, make the syrup by combining water, sugar, vanilla extract, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes.

  7. 7

Once the baklava is done baking, pour the hot syrup evenly over it, allowing it to soak in. Let it cool completely before serving.

  8. 8

Enjoy your delicious baklava with a cup of tea or coffee!
