Indulge in the sweet layers of flaky phyllo dough, crunchy walnuts, and warm spices of cinnamon, all drenched in honey syrup. This classic Middle Eastern dessert is perfect for special occasions or a cozy evening treat.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 2 cups walnuts
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Method

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  2. 2

In a bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, cinnamon, and a little sugar for flavor.

  3. 3

Brush a 9x13 inch baking dish with melted butter. Layer 5 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each with butter before adding the next.

  4. 4

Sprinkle a layer of the walnut mixture on top of the phyllo. Repeat the layering, alternating phyllo and walnut mixture, until all ingredients are used. Finish with 5 layers of phyllo on top, brushed with butter.

  5. 5

Cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes using a sharp knife.

  6. 6

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

  7. 7

While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by boiling together water, sugar, and vanilla in a saucepan for about 10 minutes.

  8. 8

Once baked, pour the hot syrup over the baklava and let it cool completely before serving.
