These homemade bagels are a warm embrace of chewy goodness, topped with sesame and poppy seeds for a delightful crunch. Perfect for a cozy weekend breakfast or a special brunch gathering with friends.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon poppy seeds

Method

  1. 1

In a large bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until foamy.

  2. 2

Add bread flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  4. 4

Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  5. 5

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add baking soda.

  6. 6

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and then poke a hole in the center to form a bagel shape.

  7. 7

Boil each bagel in the water for about 30 seconds on each side, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  8. 8

Sprinkle with sesame or poppy seeds if desired, then bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

I can’t wait to make these bagels again; they were such a hit. Sharing them with friends was a joy, and I know they’d love to make their own too.
