Experience the vibrant flavors of South Africa with this comforting bobotie, a spiced meat dish topped with a creamy egg custard, served alongside fragrant yellow rice. Ideal for a cozy family dinner or a festive gathering.
Babotie
What you need
- 1 kg mince
- 2 units onions (diced)
- 5 ml salt
- 125 ml raisins
- 12.5 ml curry
- 5 ml sugar
- 3 units bananas (optional)
- 190 ml milk
- 12.5 ml vinegar
- 12.5 ml chutney
- 2 units eggs
- 2 slices bread
- 25 ml margarine
Method

Beat the eggs and milk together, soak the bread in this.

Brown onions and mince in margarine.

Add curry powder, vinegar, chutney, salt and pepper, and raisins, cook for a few minutes.

Mash in the bread (which has been soaked in milk).

Place in an oven-proof dish, dot with small pieces of margarine, and add sliced bananas on top.

Add the balance of the milk mixture.

Bake in a medium oven for 30 minutes.
Yellow Rice
What you need
- 10 ml margarine
- 10 ml sugar
- 5 ml turmeric
- 190 ml raisins
Method
- 1
Cook rice, adding margarine, sugar, turmeric, and raisins.
