Indulge in the warm, flaky layers of Apfelstrudel, a classic Austrian dessert filled with sweet, spiced apples and a hint of cinnamon. Perfect for cozy evenings or festive gatherings, this treat pairs beautifully with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 pinch salt
- 1 large egg
- 4 tablespoons water
- 6 medium apples
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
- 4 tablespoons butter
Method
- 1
In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the egg and warm water.
- 2
Mix until a dough forms, then knead it for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover with a towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- 3
While the dough is resting, prepare the filling. In a bowl, combine the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, and breadcrumbs. Mix well.
- 4
Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a thin rectangle. Brush the surface with melted butter.
- 5
Spread the apple mixture evenly over the dough, leaving a small border around the edges.
- 6
Carefully roll the dough from one edge to the other to form a log shape. Place it seam-side down on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- 7
Brush the top with remaining melted butter. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- 8
Let it cool slightly, then slice and serve warm, optionally dusted with powdered sugar.
