Indulge in warm, wholesome wheaten scones, bursting with the sweetness of honey and the chewiness of currants. Perfect for a cozy breakfast or afternoon tea, these scones are a delightful treat any day of the week.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 2 cups whole wheat flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 3/4 cup buttermilk
- 1 tablespoon honey
- 1/2 cup currants or raisins
Method
- 1
Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, baking powder, and salt.
- 3
Add the cold, cubed butter into the flour mixture and rub it in with your fingers until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs.
- 4
Stir in the buttermilk and honey (if using) until just combined. If using, fold in the currants or raisins.
- 5
Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat the dough into a round shape about 2 cm thick.
- 6
Cut the round into 8 wedges and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each scone.
- 7
Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 8
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with butter or jam.
