Indulge in the sweet layers of Classic Nanaimo Bars, a delightful Canadian treat featuring a rich chocolate base, creamy custard filling, and a smooth chocolate topping. Perfect for a cozy dessert after dinner or a festive gathering.
Base
What you need
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 5 tbsp cocoa powder
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 3/4 cups digestive biscuit crumbs
- 1 cup desiccated coconut
- 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or almonds

Melt butter, sugar, and cocoa over low heat. Stir in egg and cook briefly until thickened. Remove from heat and mix in crumbs, coconut, and nuts. Press firmly into a lined square tin.
Custard Layer
What you need
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 2 cups icing sugar
- 2 tbsp custard powder
- 2 tbsp milk
Method

Beat butter until light. Add icing sugar, custard powder, and milk. Beat until smooth and spread evenly over the base. Chill for 20 minutes.
Chocolate Topping
What you need
- 115 g semi-sweet chocolate
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
Method

Melt chocolate and butter together. Spread thinly over the custard layer. Chill until set, then score before fully hard.
Assembly
Notes
Chill well before slicing for clean layers. Traditional versions use Bird’s custard powder. Store refrigerated and serve slightly cool.
