Experience the warm embrace of homemade chapati, a staple Indian flatbread made with whole wheat flour and a hint of oil. Perfect for weeknight dinners, it pairs beautifully with curries or can be enjoyed on its own with a dollop of butter.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon additional oil

Method

  1. 1

In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and salt.

  2. 2

Add the tablespoon of oil and mix it into the flour until well combined.

  3. 3

Gradually add water, mixing with your hands or a spoon, until a soft dough forms.

  4. 4

Knead the dough for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.

  5. 5

Divide the dough into equal portions (about 8 balls), then roll each ball into a flat circle about 6-7 inches in diameter.

  6. 6

Heat a skillet or tava over medium heat. Cook each chapati for about 1-2 minutes on one side, until small bubbles form.

  7. 7

Flip the chapati and apply a little oil. Cook until both sides are golden brown and slightly puffed.

  8. 8

Repeat with the remaining dough balls, stacking the cooked chapatis in a clean cloth to keep warm.
