Savor the rich flavors of Bamia, a hearty Middle Eastern stew featuring tender lamb and vibrant okra simmered in a spiced tomato sauce. Perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner that warms the soul.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams okra, fresh
  • 500 grams lamb or beef, diced
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 2 teaspoons ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Method

  1. 1

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.

  3. 3

Stir in the minced garlic and diced lamb or beef, cooking until the meat is browned on all sides.

  4. 4

Add the tomato puree, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper to the pot, mixing well.

  5. 5

Cover the pot and let it simmer for 20 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.

  6. 6

Carefully add the okra to the pot, stirring gently to incorporate.

  7. 7

Cover again and simmer for another 15-20 minutes, until the okra is tender.

  8. 8

Serve hot with rice or bread, and enjoy your Bamia!
