Experience the comforting flavors of Chinese tea eggs, where hard-boiled eggs are steeped in a fragrant blend of soy sauce, black tea, and five-spice. These savory delights are perfect for a cozy weeknight dinner or as a unique snack.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 6 large eggs
- 2 cups water
- 2 tablespoons soy sauce
- 2 tablespoons black tea leaves
- 1 teaspoon five-spice powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar
Method
- 1
Place the eggs in a saucepan and cover them with cold water.
- 2
Bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes.
- 3
Remove the eggs from the saucepan and let them cool slightly. Once cool enough to handle, gently crack the shells all over with the back of a spoon.
- 4
In the same saucepan, combine 2 cups of fresh water, soy sauce, black tea leaves, five-spice powder, salt, and sugar. Bring to a simmer.
- 5
Return the cracked eggs to the saucepan. Simmer for 5 more minutes, allowing the flavors to infuse.
- 6
Remove the eggs and let them cool. For best flavor, refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
- 7
Peel the eggs and enjoy them sliced or whole, as a snack or part of a meal.
