Indulge in the warm embrace of Germknödel, a delightful Austrian steamed dumpling filled with sweet plum jam and topped with nutty poppy seeds. Perfect for a cozy dessert or a unique treat at your next gathering.
IngredientsWhat you need
- 500 g all-purpose flour
- 250 ml milk
- 1 packet dry yeast
- 50 g sugar
- 1 pinch salt
- 50 g melted butter
- 200 g powdered poppy seeds
- 100 g plum jam
Method
- 1
In a small saucepan, warm the milk until it is lukewarm. Add the dry yeast and a teaspoon of sugar, and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
- 2
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and melted butter.
- 3
Mix the ingredients together until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 4
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- 5
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece and place a spoonful of plum jam in the center. Gather the edges to enclose the filling and shape into a ball.
- 6
Place the dough balls on a floured surface, cover them again, and let rise for another 20 minutes.
- 7
Bring a large pot of water to a simmer. Carefully place the dumplings into the water and cook for about 15 minutes, until they float to the top.
- 8
Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon, and serve warm, topped with melted butter and sprinkled with powdered poppy seeds.
