Savor the comforting flavors of South Africa with this traditional bobotie, a spiced ground beef dish topped with a creamy egg custard. Ideal for a cozy weeknight dinner or a festive gathering with friends and family.

Ingredients

  • 500 grams ground beef
  • 1 medium onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 2 tablespoons curry powder
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 slices bread
  • 2 tablespoons apricot jam
  • 2 eggs large
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Method

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. 2

In a large pan, sauté the chopped onion and minced garlic until soft.

  3. 3

Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Stir in the curry powder, salt, and apricot jam.

  4. 4

Soak the bread in half of the milk, then squeeze out excess liquid and crumble into the meat mixture.

  5. 5

In a separate bowl, mix the beaten eggs with the remaining milk and stir into the meat mixture thoroughly.

  6. 6

Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish and smooth out the top.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-60 minutes or until set and golden on top.

  8. 8

Let it cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with yellow rice and chutney.
