Indulge in the sweet layers of baklava, a classic Middle Eastern dessert made with flaky phyllo dough, rich nuts, and honey syrup. Perfect for special occasions or a delightful end to any meal.

Ingredients

  • 1 package phyllo dough
  • 250 grams unsalted butter
  • 200 grams walnuts
  • 200 grams pistachios
  • 100 grams granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 200 ml water
  • 200 grams honey

Method

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).

  2. 2

In a bowl, mix the chopped walnuts, pistachios, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon.

  3. 3

Grease a baking dish with some melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each layer with melted butter.

  4. 4

Spread a layer of the nut mixture over the phyllo. Add 5 more sheets of phyllo dough on top, again brushing each layer with butter.

  5. 5

Repeat the layering process until all the nut mixture is used, finishing with a top layer of about 10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushed with butter.

  6. 6

Cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.

  7. 7

Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until golden brown.

  8. 8

While the baklava bakes, prepare the syrup by boiling water and honey together for about 10 minutes. Let it cool.

  9. 9

Once out of the oven, pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava. Let it soak and cool before serving.

I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to layer the phyllo dough, and the final result tasted even better than I expected. The combination of buttery layers and crunchy walnuts was absolutely delicious.

The delicate layers of phyllo dough offer a satisfying crunch that contrasts beautifully with the warm, nutty richness of the walnuts, while the sweet, syrupy finish envelops the palate with a luscious sweetness. Its aroma fills the air with hints of toasted nuts and fragrant spices, creating an inviting atmosphere that tempts the senses.
